Thomas A. Stiehm was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1952. In 1955, his family moved to the Milwaukee area in West Allis, Wisconsin where he attended school until 1970. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps.
Tom was stationed first at Camp Pendelton, California and then at Camp Schwab, Okinawa and Quantico, Virginia. While stationed in Okinawa, Tom served as an infantryman in the 2nd Battalion 9th Moving Regiment. His father, Maynard (Bud) Stiehm, had served in the 9th Marines in the Pacific during WWII.
In 1973, Tom was discharged from the service. He then worked at various positions, including a position as a UPS driver, postal clerk, and Milwaukee County deputy sheriff.
In 1976, Tom joined the ranks at the Austin Police Department. Tom was a police officer in Austin during labor disputes in the mid 1980s and saw firsthand how the City suffered through the strike.
In 1989, Tom was promoted to detective sergeant, and in 1990, he became Austin’s representative on the Southeast Minnesota Drug Task Force.
Between 1989 and 2006 at the time of his retirement, Tom was involved in many major criminal cases in the Austin area.
Tom was elected mayor in 2006, a month after retiring from the Austin Police Department. He became Austin’s 43rd mayor in January 2007.
Tom married Sarah in 1993. He has one son, Michael and one daughter, Christine.
