The Special Incident Response Team, otherwise known as S.I.R.T., is managed by Detective Brian Krueger. The SIRT team is currently comprised of approximately eleven members from the APD and MCSD, whom respond to high risk incidents such as people threatening suicide or barricaded suspects. The SIRT team began approximately six years ago because of the life threatening situations that can arise in the law enforcement field. The team undergoes extensive training in order to be "a group of one" when dealing with high risk offenders or situations. The team needs to know how the next member will react in achieving the altimate goal of resolving a critical incident without anyone getting hurt. A hostage/crisis negotiator is also used for suicidal suspects when timing is not of the essence, for example.
