Terese Amazi
Terese Amazi moved to Austin in 1988 and began a 30-year career working for the Mower County Sheriff’s Department, first in the jail and later as an undercover narcotics detective. Officer Amazi ran for the office of Mower County Sheriff in 2002 and became the first female elected as a county sheriff in the state of Minnesota. During her 16-year tenure as sheriff, she led the building of the new Mower County Justice Center, updated the department’s radio communication system, implemented a prescription drug drop-off program, and was named to the governor’s taskforce for child protection. Sheriff Amazi was actively involved with the creation of the Seibel Center, advocating for the importance of a supervised visitation center in the community.
