Paid On-Call Firefighter

PAY RANGE:   $9.50/hr. starting/training wage (approx. 5-6 months)
                       $14.00/hr. (after initial training period)

DEADLINE:   5:00 PM, Friday, October 27, 2017

Minimum requirements include: High school graduate or GED equivalent, valid Minnesota driver’s license and knowledge of driver safety and first aid.

Employment contingent upon the satisfactory results of a background investigation, physical fitness testing and written examination.  The City of Austin will provide the necessary training in the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment.  Successful candidate must also be able to respond from their residence within 10-minutes.

Physical agility testing will be conducted on Saturday, November 4 starting at 9:00 AM and a written test will be given at 11:00 AM the same day for the candidates that pass the physical agility testing.  Both will be conducted at the fire department.  Practice for the physical agility, for those interested, will be held on Saturday, October 28 at 9:00 AM.

The City of Austin’s Public Library has several flexible, entry-level, 12-14 hours/week job openings for precise, careful people who are great at customer service.  Hours of work will include nights and rotating weekend schedule.

Job duties include quickly and correctly re-stocking library shelves, providing customer service at the front desk, and maintaining an orderly building.  Familiarity with computers is required.  Positions open until filled.  Applications are available at City Hall at 500 4th Avenue NE, at the public library at 323 4th Avenue NE or available online at  An Equal Opportunity Employer.  The pay range for these positions are $9.50 – $10.50/hr.


Substitute Crossing Guard
Position open until filled

The City of Austin has a opening for a substitute school crossing guard.  This position performs routine public safety work to ensure the safe passage of school-aged children across streets & intersections.

Essential duties include; Maintain a presence at an assigned intersection each day that school is in session at the times assigned: usually between 7:15 – 8:15 AM and 2:30 – 3:30 PM.  Starting times may vary with late starts and early release days from school.

Pay range – $9.50/hr.

Duties of the Human Resources department include:

  • Serving as the City’s contact for the hiring process including – advertisement, receiving applications of employment, application review and interviewing process
  • Maintenance of personnel files and contact for employee/employment relations
  • Provide oversight and administration of employee labor agreements and participate as a management team member in the negotiation process
  • Provide benefit oversight, coordination and assistance to employees and providers (health/life insurance, flexible spending, etc.)
  • Ensure state and federal mandates related to personnel issues are being followed/implemented
  • Provide employment verification (includes position title, employment starting & ending dates and salary)
  • Serve as the City’s safety manager
  • Serve as the liaison to the Human Rights Commission and Police & Fire Civil Service Commissions
