Water Quality Specialist/Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician

The City of Austin is looking to fill this open position.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the administrative and technical duties in association with the City Storm Water Management Plan, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (MS4 Permit), and other water quality related studies/plans. Responsible for the development, operation and maintenance of the GIS system for storm sewer, sanitary sewer, street lights, streets and trails. Technical duties include; drawing, recording and filing of engineering documents, inspection, review, design and enforcement. 

This is a fulltime, non-exempt position and includes a complete benefit package with a wage range of $25.78 – $30.69.  Minimum requirements include: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and two years of related technical or college training in civil engineering technology or natural sciences with specialized training in storm water management and/or collection systems; two years of related technical or college training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or related field such as Geography, Engineering Technology, Computer Science with an emphasis in GIS coursework and training; and two (2) years’ related experience; or any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.

Job Description


Facilities, Energy and Maintenance Technician

The City of Austin is looking to fill this new position that is responsible for the effective and efficient operation and maintenance of government buildings.  Position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the custodian care, maintenance and operation of City facilities and City-owned properties.

This is a fulltime, non-exempt position and includes a complete benefit package with a wage range of $21.81 – $25.96.  Minimum requirements include:  Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and Two (2) years’ responsible experience performing technical maintenance and repair work in the areas of building, grounds and equipment maintenance including mechanical, plumbing, carpentry and HVAC repair; the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems.

Job Description


Police Officer

Phase I – Application review – reviewed following the June 29, 2018 deadline.
Phase II – Physical agility testing (candidates will be notified by email).  This testing is anticipated to be conducted the week of July 9 – July 14, 2018.  This is a pass/fail test.
Phase III – Oral interviews for candidates that pass the physical agility testing.  These are tentatively scheduled to be conducted the week of July 23, 2018.
Minimum Requirements:

Two-year degree in law enforcement, MN POST Board license or eligible for licensure by July 21, 2018 and valid MN Driver’s License.  Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, are required.

Preferred qualifications include bachelor’s degree in law enforcement, previous law enforcement experience, specialized law enforcement skills and fluency in a second language.

Substitute Crossing Guard

Position open until filled

The City of Austin has a opening for a substitute school crossing guard.  This position performs routine public safety work to ensure the safe passage of school-aged children across streets & intersections.

Essential duties include; Maintain a presence at an assigned intersection each day that school is in session at the times assigned: usually between 7:15 – 8:15 AM and 2:30 – 3:30 PM.  Starting times may vary with late starts and early release days from school.

Pay range – $9.50/hr.

Duties of the Human Resources department include:

  • Serving as the City’s contact for the hiring process including – advertisement, receiving applications of employment, application review and interviewing process
  • Maintenance of personnel files and contact for employee/employment relations
  • Provide oversight and administration of employee labor agreements and participate as a management team member in the negotiation process
  • Provide benefit oversight, coordination and assistance to employees and providers (health/life insurance, flexible spending, etc.)
  • Ensure state and federal mandates related to personnel issues are being followed/implemented
  • Provide employment verification (includes position title, employment starting & ending dates and salary)
  • Serve as the City’s safety manager
  • Serve as the liaison to the Human Rights Commission and Police & Fire Civil Service Commissions
